Is it Dandruff?

The biggest question stylists get in the colder months are always about how they can stop their scalp from flaking or what is the flaking on their scalp?

There are several reasons you could have a flaky scalp: buildup from products or hard water, dry scalp, psoriasis, sebhorrreic dermatitis, eczema, or a fungus.

The easiest to treat is product/hard water buildup. I would highly recommend getting high quality shampoo and conditioner AND styling products. Lots of drugstore products contain ingredients that will make your hair feel soft, but really what it’s doing is coating your hair in a waxy substance that you can only get off by doing a deep clarifying treatment. I would also highly recommend getting a water filter/filtered shower head for your shower because not only will it stop your hair from feeling dry and brittle but it will stop all sorts of nasty minerals from Atlanta’s city water getting in your hair.

Dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, or a fungus you will need a dermatologist. Now, how do you know if its build up or a fungus? Well a fungus will give off an odor and the flakes coming off of your scalp won’t just be white. All of these conditions are able to be treated or controlled by a dermatologist.

Dry scalp is something also pretty easily treatable. Try not to use an overly stripping shampoo and don’t constantly wash your hair. Your scalps oils are very important for it’s health and if you overly strip it then you are causing it to over produce that oil (which means you can have a dry scalp and very oily hair). A product that is very helpful is Hairstory New Wash. It is a co-wash. It will not overly strip your scalp of its naturally produced oils while still cleansing your scalp of all the bad stuff. Another thing that can help is an overnight hair oiling treatment, this practice has been used in many cultures for hundreds of years. Lastly, if you don’t like either of those options, get a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that is tailored to your hair, make sure it won’t weigh your strands down and try not to wash your hair more than 2-3 times per week. Stretch your washes.

REMEMBER: HEALTHY SCALP = HEALTHY HAIR

Your hair and nails are the LAST things to get nutrients in your body which is why when you’re stressed or sick your hair and nails will get brittle or lose their shine. One way to be sure that doesn't happen is to take biotin supplements.
